DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSIONSPN defines diversity, equity, and inclusion as the following: Diversity: The ways in which people differ, such as race/ethnicity, religion, color, gender identity and/or expression, sexual orientation, geographic/national origin, ability, age, education, ideas/perspectives, values, among others. Equity: Recognizing the differences in resources and/or knowledge that allow individuals to fully participate in society and attain their full potential. To have equitable systems, all people should receive what they need and be treated fairly, unhampered by artificial barriers, stereotypes or prejudices. Inclusion: Authentically engaging and valuing all individuals, especially traditionally excluded individuals and/or groups, into processes, activities, and decision/policy making in a way that shares power. SPN believes that it is the responsibility of every pediatric nurse to understand how health disparities influence the provision of person-centered care. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force has collated resources to guide your understanding and advocating for children.
