CLINICAL PRACTICE GUIDELINES

The Society of Pediatric Nurses creates Clinical Practice Guidelines that aim to articulate the Society's recommendations for the application of evidence-based practice on foundational and pivotal issues affecting the specialty of pediatric nursing and the health care of children and their families. Clinical practice guidelines should promote best practices to advocate quality nursing care and outcomes for children and families.

A clinical practice guideline includes scientific and evidence-based recommendations intended to optimize patient care through a systematic review of current literature. It should guide decisions and provide criteria regarding diagnosis, management and/or treatment.

Management of Concussion (Mild Traumatic Brain Injury) in the Pediatric and Adolescent Patient

Concussion in children and adolescents continues to be a prevalent public health concern. Before 2018, there have not been any broad, evidence-based guidelines in the US for diagnosing, diagnosing, and managing pediatric concussion/mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).  The care and education provided to children with concussion/mTBI and their families must be evidence-based, regardless of the clinical and community setting. Clinical outcomes in this population are greatly affected by initial treatment guidelines. Although the most recent treatment guidelines are similar regarding initial management (short period of targeted brain rest), the advancement through recovery is individualized and should consider pre-morbid risk factors that can affect the anticipated recovery.

Chronic Conditions

The purpose of this clinical practice guideline is to develop and disseminate evidence-based recommendations for pediatric nurses in supporting families of children with chronic conditions, particularly those with complex needs. A review and synthesis of the literature on families of children with chronic conditions led to recommendations addressing four domains of family support: physical and mental health, caregiving, social and financial. These domains are also consistent with those articulated in existing measures of family functioning in the pediatric chronic care literature. Within each domain, recommendations focus on areas for assessment and intervention for parents, family caregivers, and siblings to support their overall well-being and coping, which can also have positive impacts on the child with a chronic condition.

Breastfeeding

Human milk and breastfeeding are preferred for all infants through the first year and beyond. Only 22% of all infants are exclusively breastfed for the first six months, and only 31% of infants are breastfed for one full year. Pediatric nurses play a critical role in helping mothers achieve their personal breastfeeding goals, and this clinical practice guideline aims to guide pediatric nurses in all practice settings.
