35th Anniversary Highlight: Pediatric Partnerships

Kathy Van Allen, MSN, RN, CPN

As we celebrate SPN’s 35th anniversary, we reflect upon some of the key partnerships that have benefited our organization and members. SPN recognizes the value of collaboration and partnering with other organizations to align resources and efforts on key initiatives, share knowledge, enhance membership offerings, and amplify our voice in the advocacy for children and families.

Several examples of strong partnerships that have been in place include:

Journal of Pediatric Nursing
In the February 2002 issue of theJournal of Pediatric Nursing (JPN) Dr. Cecily Betz, PhD, RN, FAAN, the journal’s Founding Editor, published an editorialthat announced the designation of JPN as the official journal of SPN. This 23-year partnership has provided SPN members with complimentary access to a dedicated, peer-reviewed pediatric nursing journal, rich in research and evidence-based practice content. SPN has a dedicated column within the journal where the organization can share key SPN resources and information with a broader group outside of our organization.

Pediatric Nursing Certification Partnerships
SPN strongly supports and encourages certification for nurses at both basic and advanced practice levels. Certification demonstrates a nurse’s commitment to continuous learning and excellence in practice. To support our members, SPN partners with the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to offer SPN members discounts on the initial certification exam. In addition, these organizations provide additional specialty certification, continuing education, and competency development for nursing caring for children, adolescents, and young adults.

Nursing Community Coalition
SPN is a member of the
Nursing Community Coalition(NCC), an alliance dedicated to building consensus and advocating on healthcare issues, including practice, education, research, and regulation. The coalition currently includes 64 national and professional nursing organizations representing more than 4.5 million nurses. NCC strives to build consensus and serve as a collective voice for the nursing profession to advocate to improve care for children, families, and communities by advocating for education, practice, research, and regulation within the nursing profession.

Association of Child Life Professionals
SPN and the
Association of Child Life Professionals(ACLP) originally partnered together in 2014 to update the Pediatric Bill of Rights. The Pediatric Bill of Rights is a statement outlining the rights and expectations for pediatric patients and their families within healthcare settings. Our organizations have partnered again this past year to review and update the document, ensuring it reflects the needs of the changing healthcare environment for our patients, families, and team members.

These are a few of SPN’s partners and the impact they have on our members, organization, and community. SPN has many other corporate and organizational partners. Together we can provide our members with a wide range of resources and share our voices to address the pressing needs facing pediatric healthcare. Learn more aboutSPN partnerships
