November Update
Jennifer Lombardi, Board Liaison & Greater Kansas City Chapter President
The Greater Kansas City Chapter hosted their first in-person only CE Workshop since February 2020. When the Covid-19 pandemic closed the world, we shifted our Fall CE Workshop to virtual. We were thrilled to have more than 130 nurses, from across the country join our virtual offering. The feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. We continued to offer the twice a year program virtually until September of 2023. We tried our hand at a hybrid model and did have a strong registration but only two people arrived in person.
Our GKC Chapter is proud of the offerings we have presented but we see great value in the in-person presentations. We decided our Winter/Spring offering would be virtual, but our Fall CE would be in-person ONLY! We were somewhat hesitant to not offer the virtual option, especially with 11 presenters, but we had 22 nurses register and hosted a great CE workshop.
We also tried our hand at the new trend of Micro-Learning. This approach to education allows for several speakers on one topic. The benefit is two-fold; first, one speaker does not have to put a one-hour presentation together on a topic, second, the participants receive a multifaceted dynamic presentation on a topic. It is a win-win for all.
Our leadership team is also eager to help any chapters who are struggling to put together ideas for continuing education. Reach out if you need help. We have a lot of ideas.
Find Speakers with the Journal of Pediatric Nursing
Kate Bogue, Chapter Support & Development Committee President & Southwest PA Chapter President
Are you looking for a way to help your chapter find speakers for virtual education sessions? Look in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing (JPN)! That’s what our Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter did in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and we attracted over 50 local nurses – the highest attendance we’ve had in years! While glancing through a recent JPN issue, I noticed an article written by one of our chapter members, Dr. Angela Karakachian, and her co-authors: “Did I Do the Right Thing?” Nurses' Experiences of Caring for Victims of Child Maltreatment: A Qualitative Study. I reached out and asked if she’d present her study in a virtual format to our chapter. The presentation was advertised through various channels and even attracted non-members, especially PICU, ED, and post-surgical trauma nurses who regularly care for children with injuries from non-accidental trauma. Attendees related to feelings expressed by nurses in the study and asked questions directly to the researcher. Next time you’re thumbing through an issue of JPN, keep an eye out for studies that would resonate with nurses in your area and contact the author(s)! Authors’ contact info is usually published for that reason – to discuss their work with whom it’s most relevant.
